Hannah’s first handwritten letter from Washington (dated 8/20/13):

Scow Familia

Thank you so incredibly much for the package! It was here when I got here.  You are the best.  I’m sorry I was horrible at calling.  Today they picked us up from the airport, went straight to church for a lil orientation and hit the campo (field).  I went out with 2 hermanas and we tried to go to their appointments but no one was really home.  So we contacted some peops on the street.  They made me do it and say a prayer with the investigator.  They said I did good and were surprised how calm and confident I was.  I too surprised myself.  Spending 6 weeks in the Mexico MTC definitely helped.  President Taylor and his wife are super nice.  At 6 today we came back to their house and ate dinner with all the missionaries that got in today.  We get to meet our companions in the morning.  I love you all and the package was so amazing.  It made my day for sure.  I love the skirt.  You are the best mom ever. P-day is Monday and we get to exercise every morning.  It’s so beautiful here and I’m in the Vancouver 6th Spanish Branch.  La vida esta dulce la extrano mucho!

And the email we got on Monday (8/26/13):

Hayyoooooo!  my companion is hermana patton. i loooooved my welcome package. Yes, I like the skirt. Thank you sosoosoos much. You are the best mom ever.  i sent you a letter so i hope you got it. our p day is monday. its universal. usually we email at like 10 or 11 but today we have to move to an apartment so we had to pack and stuff.

5 cool things about this week:

1: soooo ya elder hollland came to speak to our mission this week. so like 180 peops. but it was reaally inspirational and cool. like we had seen so many of his devotionals in the mtc and it was cool cause he said similar stuff but it was live. and um at the beginning we all got to shake his hand and say our name and where we were from. he is such a powerful speaker though. go watch some of his talks to missionaries, he even pounded the podium a lil.

2. the people here are pretty nice. my companion is Hermana patton from i forget where. we go running every morning but who knows how many miles it is hahha. the mission president and his wife picked us up from the airport and we slept at their house. also now i cant spell anything in english or spanish. but i am better at speaking spanish. however, everyone continues to tell me that i have a california accent. its cool to be able to just go to up to people and talk to them but sometimes its really awkward to just start up a conversation and then even awkwarder to change the topic to the church haha but im working on it. im definitely happy i went to the mtc in mexico cause i think that reaaally helped my spanish.  we are in the spanish branch and the people are all nice but its kind of hard for me to like approach them because i am still not that good at conveying my emotions or anything.

3. VANCOUVER is beautiful. like even when we were flying in it was just trees on trees and then now its still like that. and everyone has gardens. its been a pretty solid temperature lately but i heard the rain is coming soon and i am scared i will get like despressed so probabaly keep sending me letters and pictures of the sun. we lived in a members house for the first week but now we are moving into an apartment. I’m sad because our mission is a car mission instead of a bike one. but idk ill figure something out cause the last thing i want to do is get fat

4.  church yesterday was waaay different than what i expected. sacrament was last  and i got to bear my testimony in spanish. people said it was good though and that i knew a lot of spanish so that made me happy. and when i introduced myself in relief society they laughed but my comp said they laugh when they like you. soo hoepfully thats true. also my comp laughs at everyuthing i say. which is interesting. like im not really funny but then she still laughs soo ya.

anyways. i love everyone so much and i am loving being able to serve so many people. thanks for all the emails and if you write me a letter i would be the happiest hermana ever. also im at the public library right now and i got a library card. and we got to play soccer today with the other district. it was grand.  also i found trader joes.  sorry i forgot my camera cord this week 😦

The branch president's wife where she is serving sent me a text with this photo and some very kind words about Hannah. Made my day :)

Last week in the CCM

IMG_0878[1]So, me and my comp were the only people in like a 20 person house and we loved it. but they finally made us move cause they needed the house for elders. but when we were moving our stuff at like 10 at night, i locked the door on accident and then we got locked out and someone had to like come let us in. but while we were waiting it was neat and raining and i actually really liked it. a lot of times i wish i brought like binoculars cause there’s the houses on the mountains and i just want to see them closer.

there are sooo many people coming every week and last night we got to watch the devotional live from Provo so that was neat, but we barely fit in the auditorium and i was sad because our friends that got here the first week left on monday and tuesday. we usually sit with them at the devotionals. It’s weird because we became really good friends and we will probably never see them again. maybe. quien sabe.

there are so many random storms here always it so so funny.  and also sometimes airplanes fly over and play music or like people that live on the mountain just play really loud music and it’s usually “sexy and i know it”. hahaha its weird to look out at the city and think I’ll be outside these gates next week.  I’m very excited to talk to real people.   IMG_0886[1]

it’s so neat to be able to speak in spanish and like idk its hard to explain but i know way more spanish than i think. but then again i like want to say something and i forget how to say it in spanish and then i can’t even remember how to say it in english either so that is really frustrating. they really like when we speak spanish here like especially in the comedor but someopne pointed out we basically only know like church stuff in spanish. which is sort of true. so im trying to learn more casual conversation things.

but its way neat cause we get to play with the natives. like i played soccer with them and frisbee and it makes me happy cause i know more spanish than they know english hahhaha.

everyone always makes fun of my camera so i really want to buy a new one in washington.

in class yesterday we had a lil testimony meeting and our teachers bore their testimonies and we got to and it was really spiritual. i love our teachers sooo much. they are amazing and just really intelligent and kind.  IMG_0918[1]

anyways. i am so grateful i was able to come to this ccm, and at the beginning. i really liked how personal it was and it has just been an incredible experience in general. i love everyone and i love getting emails. life is so good. la iglesia es verdadera. we went to the temple today in mexico and it was legit. xoxoxooxoxox.  IMG_0938[1]

I LOVE SOCCER (and you) – MTC week 4

I LOVE SOCCER. it is seriously the funnest thing ever. i love gym time. we played with the mexicans and they are so intense and i made 2 goals. it was great. P-day is just the best in general. Oh, but then last week i hurt my ankle at soccer somehow and then it got very swollen but now it’s fine.

In class we learned commands and played simon dice (simon says) which was pretty funny.

the cafeteria keeps getting nicer and nicer.  now they have like fridges and it’s just super luxurious.  all of the sudden they started making all these really good breads at the cafeteria which are like donuts and they are so good. i ate like 3 one day. but then i have stopped.

speaking of food, it was fast sunday on sunday so we fasted from saturday lunch to sunday lunch and I’ve never fasted over night before that i can remember.  but it wasnt that hard and church was way neat and i loved it.  sundays are so cool and i really like how we have 2 devotionals and a movie at night. but last night they just announced cause there’s like too many people for the auditorium, its gonna get more confusing or something.

There are 800 people here now i think (it’s elder city) and its kind of cool but at the same time I’m sort of sad cause its way less personal. i really liked being able to see the same people and like we made some neat friends. and also the people in our class room building got switched so that was sad. but i met the like the byu football player elder mangum and he was way nice. i didnt know who he was and he was wearing cool socks so then we started talking and ya he’s on the football team so that was fun. theres so many nice people here in general and our friends that got here the first week leave on monday so im getting sad. we will like never see them again probably. oh and then when these mexicans i was friends with left, he said we can see each other in heaven and ill recognize your laugh hahahaha.

he'll recognize her laugh in heaven...

he’ll recognize her laugh in heaven…

on monday i wanted to play soccer but then i got really confused so i ended up playing football. so that was really interesting and i wasnt good at all but then one elder fell right when i was tagging him and so like it looked like i tackled him so everyone kept talking about that. so ya i like soccer more.

on tuesday we had service like always.   we washed some buildings/tables.

i forgot to talk about the crazy hailstorm last night. like right before the devotional it started raining and hailing and was just a crazy tropical storm and then everyone had to go to the devotional and got super soaked and it was hilarious. also during service the earthquake alarm went off and everyone went to the weird earthquake circles so that was also way funny

me and hermana mcdonald get along reallly well.  we are really honest. and im glad she’s my companion cause she is outgoing and it makes me more outgoing. the only problem is that all the mexicans love her and her blonde hair and last name. and then they just look at my last name and are like uuuh what is that?? but its cool cause i play soccer with them and they like my laugh.

but i cant believe i only have like a week and a half left. sorry this whole email was like about sports hahahha but class is good too. we are learning a lot of spanish and now we are like being investigators for each other and that’s a really neat experience. also we sing hymns in the morning and now we have been singing christmas ones lately for no reason. our teachers are still really nice and our zone is great. one elder in the other district went home yesterday and that was pretty sad.  and one night in our district we went around and wrote nice things about everyone in our district. it was cute. i love it here.  but i can’t wait to come back to america. and go into the mission field, and eat real food like chipotle.

I love you. and soccer.

also i just saw my friend Allie Haynie!!!! she just got here last night. ill send some pictures now. i love you byeee

Happy Wednesday – week 3

I wonder if this truck just brings water for Hannah...

I wonder if this truck just brings water for Hannah…

hola familia. happy Wednesday, aka my favorite day cause its p day (preparation day). but also tuesdays are good too cause we have a service project after gym time and it’s always really confusing and we just end up walking around for 30 minutes and then washing some random walls. but it’s always funny. last week after i emailed it was the funnest day ever. like we just played sports all day. first some soccer and then basketball and volleyball. and it was just like way fun and i love playing outside. but then the next day our teacher got a lil mad cause we were all super tired. also i got sick. but it was worth it. being sick was really lame though cause like i got a sore throat and then my head felt like 50 pounds and then i got a cold and had to blow my nose like just way too often. but now I’m feeling better.

this week went by so fast. i need to speak more Spanish but its hard because I’m not as good as other people so i get embarrassed. But like i realized i just need to suck it up, be humble, and habla espanol. It’s so fun here that i feel bad sometimes… like i just don’t understand how everything is so funny. it might be cause I’m just delirious because we’re in the classroom for like 4 hours. But it’s fun and I’m learning so much at the same time. Our teachers are way nice and like i couldn’t have imagined better teachers.  i forget if i already told you about them, but in the morning we have Hermano Ramsey and Hermano Villinuava (who told us to call him bijunueva cause that’s how the accent is) so its always just fun to say his name. He lives in mexico city. and then at night we have Hermana Martinez who used to be our investigator and Hermana Dewey who is our investigator now and sometimes i don’t really like her but I’ve learned a lot so its good. our district is also just awesome too. Everyone is pretty different but we mostly get along and have a good time. this one elder is sorta like evan. our district leader is super nice and a great leader and then like our zone (the other people in our ward at church) are way fun and we play with them a lot…like sports and they are in the same hall as us for class and have the same eating time so its just great.

i had to give a talk on Sunday about the restoration…in spanish.  It was really interesting and i accidently said jesu smith so that was cool. it went pretty well besides that though and my comp said i didn’t look nervous so i was happy about that. i love our ward and i love Sundays. we basically go to church, eat lunch  (sunday lunch is usually the best meal of the week) and then like go to some devotionals and watch a movie at night. but this sunday we watched a devotional from Jeffrey R Holland that was from the Provo MTC like in January.  it was just really neat. he got like kind of mad and like passionate and it was very motivational and made a lot of sense. oh also sunday lunch had these delicious plum things and sunday dinner had mangos!! i love sundays

i miss trader joes and i cant wait to come back to the states and eat like vegetables and peanut butter.  new missionaries came yesterday and its getting way crowded in like the comedor. all these people keep talking about my laugh, but that’s nothing new. it should literally be illegal how much fun I’m having.  me and my comp are getting along better and everything is good.

thanks for posting stuff on my blog. lisa emailed me this week that she reads it and can like hear me talking, which made me really happy.

i really like hanging my clothes on the clothes line. like for some reason it’s just so nice.

some people got like parasites from the food so that’s exciting.

maybe write me a dear elder or something,  but who knows. they like print it out and its sort of like you get it in the mail. its not that necessary, but just my comp got some and i felt left out. we did this thing called TRC last week where real people just like came to the ccm and we got to like teach them and just talk to them. and i like teaching our fake investigators.

there’s like a lil store here that everyone loves and they just have like treats and other random stuff. but ya life is good and the temple is closed for cleaning so we get to go like in 2 weeks.  i love you all and i love it here.
